Family House Now Owns the Land for the Future Nancy & Stephen Grand Family House

Family House now owns Block 7 East in Mission Bay, as of July 28, 2014. Thanks to the incredibly detailed and intrepid efforts of Karen Tiedemann, our attorney at Goldfarb and Lipman, our fearless leader, Scott Miller, and many staff and volunteer hours, the land is ours.

The process took five years to complete, primarily due to the demise of the California Redevelopment Agency; but this red letter day is a testament to merits of focusing on the goal and getting the job done. Special thanks to Catherine Reilly at the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure, as well as to the OCII Commissioners and Erica Wray at the Mission Bay Development Corporation. All made special efforts on our behalf, and we are grateful to each.

Cabernet for Connoisseurs™ 2014 - a letter from Dr. Art Ablin, Family House Founder:

Dear Karen, Neil and the 2014 Cabernet Committee:

What a wonderful event!!!

We raised a lot; I don't know exactly how much or if it was more or less than last year's Cabernet, but that doesn't make it any less spectacular than it was. It was the best. There is nothing anyone can put into words that describes the excitement there, gobs of beautiful young volunteers opening doors and giving directions, the swizzling glasses and smacking lips in the wine tasting rooms, the careful and orderly arrangement of the displayed silent auction items and the constant, hum-drum pace of the auction. The talks that Neil, Alexandra, and Dick Grace gave so eloquently brought home the Family House Mission and of course having the Ferrick Family there with young Jay's presence on the stage left no doubt about what the evening was for. I know we raised over $500,000 on people just raising their numbers, to say nothing of the rest of the wine and other items. It was absolutely the best!

East Bay painter Seamus Berkeley has undertaken a new portrait series to capture the varied life at Family House, including children undergoing treatment at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, their families, caretakers, and Family House volunteers. The painting series, entitled Portraits of Family House, will total over two dozen portraits. Their donation will coincide with the construction of the new Family House building at Mission Bay. For Seamus, the project represents a longtime goal of his - to create works of art that serve a larger social purpose. "It's about using art to tell an inspiring story and to celebrate life," says Berkeley. The project will culminate in the publication of a hardcover art book that will present the history of Family House, as well as the stories behind each of the painting subjects. Please check back for updates on Seamus' project, or read more about Seamus at http://seamusberkeley.com/blog/portraits_of_family_house_news.
