Phil Rosenthal at Family House SF working on pizza dough forming with kids and chefsPhil Rosenthal, host of the series Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix, was in San Francisco months ago planning his upcoming television series. In each episode, Phil visits chefs, restaurants, farms, and markets, eating and drinking his way through each city he visits. Phil has a loving heart, especially when it comes to children. When he heard stories about Family House and especially the incredible kids and families that stay there, their bravery inspired him. His eyes lit up as he asked if he could visit, cook with the families, and include his experience in the show. Of course, Family House welcomed him with open arms.

Cooking and sharing a meal is a big part of the Family House community. When word got out that Phil and his crew would visit, many of our city’s finest chefs couldn’t stay away. A Family House favorite, world champion Tony Gemignani (Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, Capos) took charge and demonstrated his pizza skill—including acrobatics, as he taught the kids and Phil how to pound, stretch and throw the pizza dough to make their own award-winning pizzas. The kids were mesmerized from the start, watching Tony and digging into the dough to create their own pizzas.

Chefs Dominique Crenn (Atelier Crenn, Petit Crenn), Elisabeth Prueitt (Tartine), Mourad Lahlou (Mourad, Aziza), and Kenji Lopez Alt (Wursthall) were all there helping the kids (or were the kids helping them?), with laughter all around, as the dough didn’t always land on the table. Elisabeth brought desserts, Kenji brought his amazing homemade sausages and countless other toppings including several types of cheese, pepperoni, prosciutto, peppers, caramelized onions, olives and artichokes. In the end, they were able to create a mosaic of possibilities for the kids as they put together their creations.

The pizzas were baked and shared, since sharing is what it’s all about. Phil shared his joy, his sense of humor, and his love for the families in an unforgettable experience. We can’t wait to watch the results on Netflix beginning October 30, 2020.  Hurry back, Phil!
