The Lopez Family’s Story: Healing Made Easier with Help from Uber

Three-year-old Anareli Lopez from Manteca, CA, is a bright, resilient little girl receiving care at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital for End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) — a condition where the kidneys permanently lose function, requiring long-term dialysis or a transplant. Anareli’s journey began even before she was born, when doctors diagnosed her with ESRD.

Since her arrival, her parents, Danielle and Rodolfo, and her baby brother, Sammie, have been by her side through countless treatments, hospital stays, and, most recently, a life-changing kidney transplant in June 2024. The donor was none other than her mom, Danielle. While both mother and daughter recovered from surgery — in different hospitals — getting around was a challenge, especially since Danielle couldn’t drive. That’s when free Uber rides for Family House families became a lifeline.

“We wouldn’t have known what to do without Uber rides while both me and my baby girl were recovering,” Danielle says. “Especially because our surgeries were at different hospitals — having Uber to get around during that time saved us as parents. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Uber, for your generosity towards all of us at Family House.”

Since August 2023, the Lopez family has found comfort, rest, and community at Family House during their stays. And thanks to supporters like Uber, they’ve also found the freedom to focus on what matters most — helping Anareli heal.
