A talented young pianist, Evrim Duransoy, 15, was playing the grand piano on a mellow Saturday afternoon in late spring, visiting as part of the music program. With every stroke of the piano keys, 11-year-old Estrella was more and more captivated.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-image\">\n\t\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/familyhouseinc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_0968-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15364\" style=\"width:239px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>\u201cI want to learn to play,\u201d she said to her mom, Nelly, who sat beside her with tears of emotion welling in her eyes. Estrella\u2019s baby sister Luna was bouncing around on her lap, and her dad Jesus was also beside them.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>In response to Estrella\u2019s desire to play piano, resident musician Paul Goold, Family House Director of Family Services, offered her lessons. They\u2019ve been playing together every week since that Saturday in May.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>\u201cShe loves to play piano with Paul,\u201d said Nelly, Estrella\u2019s mom.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-heading\">\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Estrella\u2019s Journey<\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>In February, Estrella and her family came to Family House from Rohnert Park, more than an hour outside of San Francisco. Estrella was admitted to UCSF Benioff Children\u2019s Hospital, where she received a bone marrow transplant to treat Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD). CGD is a genetic disorder in which white blood cells are unable to kill certain bacteria, making her highly susceptible to life-threatening infections.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-image\">\n\t\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/familyhouseinc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_3514-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15366\" style=\"width:248px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>At first, Estrella\u2019s parents were concerned that she would not be able to come home after the procedure. They didn\u2019t know where they were going to stay in San Francisco. Then they heard about Family House while they were at the hospital.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>\u201cIt was a huge relief to hear that Family House was here, not just for Estrella, but for our entire family too,\u201d said Nelly. With the comfort of knowing Family House would be there for her family, Nelly was able to completely focus on Estrella\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-embed\">\n\t\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Estrella&#039;s Story\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1120929100?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-heading\">\n\t\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More than a Place to Stay<\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>\u201cFamily House is the perfect name for this place,\u201d said Nelly. \u201cIt is not just a place to stay. Family House opened up their arms, and my family grew bigger in seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>Nelly feels at home. She especially loves that Luna has had a place to run around and can be with her big sister as much as possible as she recovers. Nelly also loves the large kitchen and \u201call the stuff you need to prepare a and enjoy a meal together as a family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-image\">\n\t\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/familyhouseinc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_1091-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15365\" style=\"width:246px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>\u201cWe are happy here. Estrella is recovering, and doing really good,\u201d said Nelly. \u201cWe will always have a place in our hearts for Family House. We are so thankful for everything Family House has done for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>Estrella and her family checked out of Family House last week and will be returning in the coming weeks and months for follow-up doctors\u2019 appointments.
