His mother, Mikayla, tirelessly sought answers, taking him to countless doctor visits until he was finally diagnosed with Neutropenia, a condition that severely lowers white blood cell levels, leaving the body vulnerable to infections. The only cure was a bone marrow transplant.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div\n\t\t\t\tclass=\"block--core-paragraph\">\n\t\n<p>At eight years old, Luca and Mikayla made the journey from their home in Placer County to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfbenioffchildrens.org\/locations\/mission-bay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCSF Benioff Children\u2019s Hospitals<\/a>, where he underwent chemotherapy and a life-saving transplant. Despite this dark time, they found strength, resilience, and connection. \u201cFamily House brought me peace,\u201d Mikayla shared. \u201cYou meet others who truly understand what you&#8217;re going through, and you don\u2019t feel so alone. Luca\u2019s personality even came back\u2014something I had almost forgotten because he had been sick for so long.
