Volunteer Mary Kane

“I love the children. They melt my heart,” said Family House volunteer Mary Kane.

Every week Mary’s energy and enthusiasm fills the house as she delivers fresh dinner meals to our families. For more than six years, she’s been actively involved in dinner service, and since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mary visits weekly to safely hand-deliver fresh meals door to door.

“In some ways, Family House has given me purpose,” said Mary. “It’s gotten me through Covid. What a gift that I’ve been able to go here every week.”

Mary’s involvement with Family House began in 2016. Mary’s friend Michele invited her to help with a holiday dinner at the recently opened Stephen and Nancy Grand Family House in Mission Bay.

“One visit and I was hooked,” said Mary, who then started coordinating a few dinners throughout that year. Pre-Covid, volunteers prepared dinner for all families, and everyone gathered in the dining room to eat together several days of the week. “My favorite thing was making and serving dinner. It’s such a simple act but I love feeding people. Watching families sharing a meal with other families fills my heart.”

Aside from volunteering, Mary is passionate about her family, her children, and playing tennis. And, one thing you may be surprised to learn about Mary is that she was a synchronized swimmer in high school!
